Description

Talibés children represent a significant social reality in Senegal. Most often from impoverished families, they are entrusted to Koranic teachers to learn the Quran and receive a religious education.

Over time, this phenomenon has become a social problem. Many talibés live on the streets, beg, and are exposed to disease, violence, and a lack of formal schooling.

This situation is linked to several social factors: poverty, rural exodus, the lack of oversight of the daaras (Koranic schools), and the inadequacy of appropriate social policies.
Protecting talibé children requires collective responsibility: the state, families, religious authorities, and civil society must work together to guarantee their fundamental rights, their dignity, and their future.

Maison de la Gare is a Senegalese non-governmental organization (NGO) that helps talibé children—especially those living on the streets or forced to beg—by offering them support, protection, education, and opportunities for a better future.
