Bulding a school in remote village in Laos

A few months ago, while traveling in northern Laos, I met Noy, a local man from a rural community who is deeply committed to improving education for children in his village.

In Nogkeo Village, Nambak District, a small school has recently been built thanks to the dedication of the local community and the leadership of Sysvath Xaiyasone (Noy).

For the children living in this remote mountain area, this school represents a crucial opportunity to learn, grow, and build a better future.

However, one important part of the project is still missing.

To protect the school and ensure the safety of the children, the community is now trying to build a protective wall around the school grounds.

The construction of the wall requires approximately 10,500 clay blocks, each costing around 15,000 kip, which represents a total material cost of about 157,500,000 kip (around 7,200 USD). This estimate does not even include the labor that will be needed for construction.

The project is driven by volunteers and by the determination of the local community. They do not expect to raise the entire amount immediately — every contribution, even small, will help move the project forward step by step.

Even reaching half of the required budget would already make a huge difference and allow the community to begin building the wall and improving the safety of the school.

Il y a quelques mois, lors d’un voyage dans le nord du Laos, j’ai rencontré Noy, un habitant d’une communauté rurale profondément engagé dans l’amélioration de l’éducation des enfants de son village.

Dans le village de Nogkeo, dans le district de Nambak, une petite école a récemment été construite grâce à l’engagement de la communauté locale et au leadership de Sysvath Xaiyasone (Noy).

Pour les enfants vivant dans cette région montagneuse isolée, cette école représente une opportunité essentielle d’apprendre, de grandir et de construire un avenir meilleur.

Cependant, une partie importante du projet manque encore.

Afin de protéger l’école et d’assurer la sécurité des enfants, la communauté cherche maintenant à construire un mur de protection autour du terrain de l’école.

La construction du mur nécessite environ 10 500 briques d’argile, chacune coûtant environ 15 000 kip, ce qui représente un coût total des matériaux d’environ 157 500 000 kip (soit environ 7 200 dollars). Cette estimation n’inclut même pas la main-d’œuvre nécessaire pour la construction.

Le projet est porté par des bénévoles et par la détermination de la communauté locale. Ils ne s’attendent pas à réunir la totalité du montant immédiatement — chaque contribution, même modeste, permettra de faire avancer le projet étape par étape.

Même atteindre la moitié du budget nécessaire ferait déjà une énorme différence et permettrait à la communauté de commencer la construction du mur et d’améliorer la sécurité de l’école.

Vor einigen Monaten, während einer Reise im Norden von Laos, traf ich Noy, einen Mann aus einer ländlichen Gemeinde, der sich stark dafür einsetzt, die Bildung der Kinder in seinem Dorf zu verbessern.

Im Dorf Nogkeo im Distrikt Nambak wurde kürzlich eine kleine Schule gebaut – dank des Engagements der lokalen Gemeinschaft und der Führung von Sysvath Xaiyasone (Noy).

Für die Kinder, die in dieser abgelegenen Bergregion leben, stellt diese Schule eine entscheidende Chance dar, zu lernen, zu wachsen und eine bessere Zukunft aufzubauen.

Ein wichtiger Teil des Projekts fehlt jedoch noch.

Um die Schule zu schützen und die Sicherheit der Kinder zu gewährleisten, versucht die Gemeinschaft nun, eine Schutzmauer rund um das Schulgelände zu errichten.

Für den Bau der Mauer werden etwa 10.500 Lehmziegel benötigt, von denen jeder etwa 15.000 Kip kostet. Das entspricht Materialkosten von insgesamt etwa 157.500.000 Kip (rund 7.200 USD).

In dieser Schätzung sind die Arbeitskosten für den Bau noch nicht einmal enthalten.

Das Projekt wird von Freiwilligen und von der Entschlossenheit der lokalen Gemeinschaft getragen. Sie erwarten nicht, den gesamten Betrag sofort zu sammeln – jeder Beitrag, auch ein kleiner, hilft dabei, das Projekt Schritt für Schritt voranzubringen.

Selbst wenn nur die Hälfte des benötigten Budgets erreicht wird, würde dies bereits einen großen Unterschied machen und es der Gemeinschaft ermöglichen, mit dem Bau der Mauer zu beginnen und die Sicherheit der Schule zu verbessern.
