In November 2023, Arthur is a 27-year-old man who is passionate about sports, reading, and his work in physics research.
A native of Toulouse, after studying in Lyon at the ENS, he recently obtained his doctorate in fundamental physics in Germany, where he had been living for several years.
He is used to working more than 50 hours a week in the laboratory, juggling several projects at once, and practices several sports 4-5 times a week.
During a business trip, he catches COVID-19. It's nothing serious, just a slight cold, so he starts working from home and carries on as if nothing has changed.
But as the days went by, he became increasingly tired and developed new symptoms: severe headaches, extreme unexplained fatigue, dizziness, nausea, memory lapses, intestinal and muscle pain... which never went away.
More than two years later, Arthur's condition has only worsened.
As a result, he can no longer work, read, play sports, or think...
Today, his symptoms are so debilitating that he can no longer engage in physical activity (15 minutes of slow walking knocks him out for several days) or focus due to neurological symptoms (headaches, dizziness, memory lapses, brain fog, exhaustion...).
He spent those two years living in shared accommodation (thank you Marc and Kevin for your tremendous help, understanding, and kindness towards him during that time! He couldn't have done it alone), and he was only able to work part-time thanks to the understanding of his employer and colleagues. Despite obtaining disabled worker status (which does not provide him with any financial support), he had to give up his new job contract in Germany because he is unable to work.
He had no choice but to move back in with his parents because he is no longer able to take care of himself on his own.
Today, he no longer goes out and spends all his time at home.
The slightest deviation from his routine causes him to “crash.” That is, he goes from total exhaustion to... a state where he seems to have trouble even opening his eyes completely.
As a result, he has virtually no social or friendly relationships.
Two years so devoid of activities, social relationships, sports, work, and prospects that, at almost 30, Arthur still feels like he's 27.
He can't do anything anymore.
He is no longer even independent for his rare trips (to doctors, physical therapists, etc.) and must be driven to his appointments, which means that one of his parents must be available to help him and has had to reduce their working hours.
But he is very strong and still retains his good nature and sense of humor.
After almost two years of tests, Arthur finally received an official diagnosis of long COVID.
But the few French doctors who “believe” in long COVID now have nothing more to offer than
“pacing”: adjusting one's activities according to one's fatigue. Indefinitely.
But since he is exhausted from morning to night...
Arthur is still looking for ways to treat himself, but since French doctors can neither offer nor consider any solutions (the Haute Autorité de Santé only recognizes pacing as a “treatment”), he has to do it himself:
He reads foreign studies and finds out about treatment attempts currently in development (efforts that knock him out for several days each time).
He takes nearly 30 dietary supplements a day to help him a little, and also tries other forms of alternative treatments recommended by doctors and/or associations (physical therapy, speech therapy, traditional Chinese medicine, hydrogenated water, nicotine patches, etc.), but without any real success to date.
Arthur therefore had to look for therapy in another country on his own.
In June 2025, on the recommendation of a friend who also had long COVID, he went to a private clinic in Germany for treatment that included apheresis (a type of dialysis) to filter out the numerous microclots in his blood which, combined with the malfunctioning of his mitochondria, were believed to be (at least in part) the cause of his exhaustion.
The price was exorbitant, but the effect was extraordinary: during the seven to eight weeks following the treatment, Arthur regained his energy, his symptoms greatly diminished, he was able to start working again a little, and he truly believed he was cured.
Unfortunately, following the fatigue caused by his move, his symptoms returned and have not left him since.
Since then, we have contacted all the hospitals that could offer apheresis treatment in France at a reasonable cost, in Toulouse, Montpellier, Paris, Bordeaux, and Metz, but from specialist to specialist, we have been met with refusal after refusal, without any alternative ever being proposed.
Arthur is strong, but he can't take it anymore.
His days are long and his nights are interrupted by insomnia. He wakes up after 10 to 12 hours of sleep feeling as tired as when he went to bed, has constant symptoms that disable him both mentally and physically, and can no longer envisage a future, personal or professional, either near or far.
So he decided to return to Germany to the same clinic and undergo the full apheresis treatment recommended by the doctor (initially three weeks, to be repeated when the effect wears off).
This time, he cannot go alone and must be accompanied by one of his parents.
The cost is approximately €2,100 per apheresis, and four to six are required per treatment.
This amounts to approximately €12,000 per treatment, or €24,000 for the year 2026, not including travel expenses or local accommodation.
This is an exorbitant cost that Arthur cannot bear alone, or even with his family, especially since it will probably have to be repeated until a cure is developed, which will take at least several years.
That is why, despite the difficulty this represents, we have decided to ask for your help, so that Arthur has the chance to undergo this treatment and can have a life again.
Thank you all.
***************
Vielen Dank!
