Help Kallistem to preserve and restore male fertility

Organisé pour : Kallistem

Who are we ? Created in 2012, the company Kallistem aims to promote the research work of Dr. Philippe Durand and Marie-Hélène Perrard, both world-renowned researchers. They are working in the field of male reproduction, particularly in the preservation of male fertility and spermatogenesis out of the body (ex vivo).

Where are we ? Formerly located on the site of the Ecole Normale Supérieur (ENS) in Lyon, we are now located in the veterinary school (VetagroSup) in Marcy L'étoile near Lyon. We have advanced technologies that have been developed with the help of our partners:

the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) and the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon, the National Institute of Health and Medical Research (INSERM),

the National Institute for Agronomic Research (INRA) and the Claude Bernard University.

What do we do ? Since 1992, our researchers have worked on the regulation of spermatogenesis, and try to produce ex vivo, normal spermatozoa from germinal stem cells. They are also studying testicular toxicology and test, in particular, the effects of some drugs, chemicals, endocrine disruptors, heavy metals, pesticides and other pollutants ... in order to reduce their impact on male fertility.

Who do we do it for ? Today, one in five men is facing to fertility problems (regardless of age) and have consulted a doctor, in a medically assisted procreation laboratory, during their life.

The reasons for these disorders may be multiple (diseases, treatments, pollution, genetics ...)

This also concerns young pre-pubertal boys who have been subjected to gonado-toxic treatment, such as certain chemotherapies, radiotherapies ... for cancer treatments

Such technology could treat approximately 120,000 adult men who suffer from infertility not supported by current technologies.

Finally, the Artistem system (developed below) also may have some applications in animals to save endangered species.

How are we proceeding ? Our researchers have developed two new technologies:

Bio-AlteR : a predictive screening model in 3D, for an early evaluation of the impact on the testicular function of different molecules (pharmaceutical or agrochemical products, cosmetics, endocrine disruptors, environmental contaminants).

Artistem (in collaboration with Laurent David Professor at IMP, Univ Lyon1) : a novel three-dimensional culture device, which is constructed as a copy of the seminiferous tubules in which spermatogenesis takes place. In this device, the researchers reproduced an environment rich in nutrients and hormones necessary for the production of spermatozoa, from the patient's own immature germ cells, without any genetic manipulation.

Situation : Since its creation Kallistem has ensured its development on its own funds (thanks to toxicology studies), as well as with the help of Cancéropôle Lyon Auvergne Rhône Alpes and bank loans.

Today, we are more than 25 years of research but unfortunately it is extremely slowed by the lack of money ! The technologies developed by Kallistem are nevertheless essential. Now several steps remain to be reached before approaching the clinical trials for the application of Artistem to men in 2021/2022 :

• Prove in the animal that the gametes obtained in Artistem give birth to physiologically and behaviorally normal newborns. To date, embryos of mice and monkeys have been obtained.

• Improve culture conditions for human biopsies to optimize gamete production.

We decided to create this kitty, so that all those who wish can participate in this research so that it succeeds and can benefit more quickly to the man. We need you! It must be emphasized that since the press conference organized by the CNRS in 2016, we have received a very large number of e-mails from patients around the world suffering from infertility.

Finally we address all the couples who have known one day the joy of being parents or who will soon discover it, to the couples who go through difficulties and to all those who have around them a person touched by the PMA: This Our research is also yours and that of your children tomorrow ...

The slightest contribution (even minimal!) can make the difference and it can be done anonymously or not. Together we can get there, the French population is about 67 million and this will certainly extend beyond! So do not hesitate! The minimum amount is 1 €, you will have no fees, no subscriber.
